This is a page devoted to Boy, Kuffer,
Alice and Mulder - the cats
who own and live with British author and web designer Wendy Wootton.
BOY is
a fabulous 'tuxedo'* black and white
neutered tom, the senior cat of the household, and the roundest
and most substantial of all the cats! He has placid and loving temperament
as a rule, but is sometimes a bit stroppy where 'foreign' cats are
concerned. He has no fear when it comes to defending his territory,
but is gentle and tolerant when it comes to allowing himself to
be cuddled. His purr is so loud and musical that it almost sounds
as if he's chirruping, especially when he's curled up on his Mum's
lap!
Update - in 2003 Boy suffered
a serious illness and had to have an operation to remove a gallstone,
which is apparently rare in cats. Happily though, he made a full
recovery and is now a happy and healthy cat. Boy is still the King
of the Cats, and likes to make sure his housemates remain aware
of that fact - in no uncertain terms!
Update - It is with profound sorrow that I have to announce the death of
Boy on Saturday 2nd September 2006.
He was taken ill quite suddenly in late August with an inoperable
abdominal tumour and we had no choice other than to allow the vet
to gently end his life in peace and with dignity. He was the sweetest
and most lovable fellow and will be forever missed by his human
mum and dad and his furry brother and sisters.
When time permits, I hope to make a memorial page for Boy.
KUFFER
is another 'tuxedo'* neutered tom,
but entirely different to Boy in both build and temperament. Somewhat
eccentric, Kuffer doesn't like to be picked up, but he does like
to snuggle up cosily on the bed, or in his favourite armchair, or
to sleep on clean washing or piles of coats. Kuffer also likes to
mountaineer, and is especially fond of climbing up on to the top
of electrical appliances like stereos and satellite decoders. From
such vantage points he surveys his 'subjects' with a baleful, commanding
stare!
Update - as he's matured into middle age, Kuffer
has become an infinitely more affectionate and more companionable
cat, and now really enjoys sitting on his mum's knee and snuggling
up whenever possible. He's also not so mad for high places now,
and enjoys sleeping on the bed and in all sorts of cozy corners.
One of his favourite hangouts is the office, on the floor, beside
his mum's computer chair - so he can keep an eye on her while she's
supposed to be working!
ALICE
is the prettiest of all the cats, a young tortoiseshell and white
female, with a flighty nature and a flouncy gait to match. A very
good mouser, Alice loves to hang around the garden for hours on
end, on the look out for tasty prey. Recently Alice has been experimenting
with a variety of new sleeping spots, and is currently favouring
the office window, the middle of the dining table or the airing
cupboard!
Update - although now approaching
her middle years, Alice is just as daft as ever!
She is still a proficient mouser though, and she still likes to
vary her sleeping spots. Her current faves are in the long grass
in the garden, on the shelf in the greenhouse, and on the bed. She
also enjoys chasing Mulder, especially in the morning when they're
both waiting for their breakfast!
MULDER
is a brave little cat who has overcome many misfortunes in her early
life. Her heavy limp and lack of a tail do not detract from the
cuteness of her semi-oriental face, and the beauty of her velvety
black coat - or from her ability to climb, jump and run like the
wind. As Mulder grows older she's becoming more and more of a character,
and seems to be able to tap into unending new reserves of energy.
Particularly when she indulges in a playful 'mad half hour' and
gallops around the house - often in the small hours of the morning!
Update - even though she's a mature
cat now, Mulder still behaves like a kitten most
of the time. Like Alice, she too is an accomplished mouser, which
is all the more of an achievement considering she only has four
teeth now. Chronic gingivitis a few years ago meant she had to have
all the rest removed - but that doesn't stop her eating a prodigious
amount of all her favourite foods!
[*a 'tuxedo'
is a mainly black cat who has a white bib and paws, and white on his or
her nose and chin!]
